Documents relating to the planning of the Blue Building rehabilitation have been saved here as a resource for volunteers who are interested in having a more thorough understanding of the principles and guidelines of the project.
Spring 2008 Project Action Agenda
This document has been developed in order to supply volunteers and interested citizens with information regarding the nine (9) most important benchmarks for the completion of the Blue Building Project. As with any plan, this plan is subject to change in order to adjust to unknowns and weather.
Geotechnical Engineering Analysis
After demolition was completed, the southern column piers were found to have sunk since the building was constructed nearly 40-years ago. Additionally, the floor in southern half of the building was found to have heaved and, therefore, require replacement. In order to remediate this possible structural deficiency and the floor heaving, the City of Horton contracted with Terracon Consulting Engineers to evaluate the moisture, load bearing capacity, and general character of the geology surrounding the Blue Building. The final report from Terracon has been provided in order to give volunteers and interested citizens regarding the findings of the report and to better understand the remedial actions that will be necessary to correct the building.
Foundation Remediation & Construction Plan
After demolition of the Blue Building, there were structural defects related to foundation settling caused by heavy snow loads during the first 40-years of the building. After extensive geotechnical investigations were performed, City officials and staff, in conjunction with representatives of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Kansas Rural Water Association, have developed a plan for remediating and correcting the settling of the south foundation of the Blue Building.
Foundation Remediation Plan, Amended Draft No. 1
The first version of the Foundation Remediation Plan was missing important and relevant parameters for constructing new pier-footings for the Blue Building. Information from both the Terracon Geotechnical Report and the International Building Code of 2006 have been incorporated into the amended draft in order to provide for more direction and guidance to volunteers in constructing the replacement pier-footings.
