Horton, Kan.  Horton water service customers are advised that water service for the CIty of Horton, Kansas, was restored on Monday, November 5, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.  A boil order for all citizens on the east side of Central Avenue is in effect until approximately 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 6.  Citizens on the west side of Central avenue were unaffected by the water service interruption and, therefore, need to take no precautions before using their water for personal consumption.

Water service customers of the City of Horton east of Central Avenue are recommended to take the following precautions in using water until notified.  Notification is expected by 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

  •  Boil water vigorously for one minute prior to use. Use only boiled water for drinking, diluting fruit juices, and all other food preparation.
  •  Disconnect automatic ice-makers from water supply lines.  Dispose of any ice cubes made from possibly contaminated water and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker if the icemaker is not disconnected from water supply lines.  Remake ice cubes with water that has been boiled.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing or using backyard pools so water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

Water service customers, in preparation for the boil order, may choose to store water in approved water containers in order to avoid boiling waters for consumption purposes.  Additionally, if water service customers choose to boil such water, covering kettles of water with a lid will help to both bring waters to a boil at a faster rate and unnecessarily prevent heat from the water from escaping into the home.

Once the boil order has ceased, water service customers will be notified by both automated telephone call and by press release to local media outlets, including KNZA Radio 103.9 FM.

For questions relating to the boil order, please contact either the City of Horton at (785) 486-2681 or, if you choose, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Municipal Water Supply, Northeast Kansas Office at (785) 842-4600.
